Yet more detail on the downloading habits of new smartphone owners this Christmas, with news that the popular Angry Birds game was downloaded over 6.5 million times on Christmas Day.
The download figure comes from Angry Birds VP of Franchise Development, Ville Heijari: “We are really excited to have such a massive number of new people get acquainted with Angry Birds over the holidays,” said Heijari. “We have exciting new releases lined up for 2012, and can't wait to introduce them to the public.”
The 6.5 million figure includes all Angry Birds titles, the original Angry Birds, Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds seasons, and covers all platforms the game is available for, as well as free and paid for versions of the app.
Angry Birds was first released back in December 2009 and quickly became one of the leading games released for a mobile phone, regularly placing at the top of download charts week after week. The app passed the 500 million download mark back in November 2011.
The 6.5 million mark is a huge improvement on last years downloads, which numbered around 2 million, and is further evidence for the popularity of smartphones. Analytic firm Flurry estimated that around 242 million apps were downloaded on the Android and iOS platforms on Christmas Day alone, with more than one billion apps downloaded during the Christmas week.
