Android may be the leading in terms of number of users in the world but when it comes to actual revenue Apple is still leading the way. Distimo is a Mobile platform analytic firm and it has recently published its annual report about the Smart Phone applications and their revenues. These reports clearly show that Apple’s platform is still number one when it comes to money making. According to the report iPhone applications (top 200 grossing apps) generate four times as much as revenue as Android Market. While iPad store generates double revenue when compared to Android Market. The above picture shows the total revenue of top 3 stores.
The reports also highlight the growing number of freemium applications. Android Market has almost 65% of applications being freemium while iPhone has the ratio of 51%. The diagram below shows the share of freemium applications in iPhone Store of this year (highest in September) on month by month basis.
Android did however have more free applications than iPhone or any other. They are leading the way in this category since Jun 2011. But still they are leading in free applications while lagging behind in terms of money.
All major apps stores have at least doubled the number of applications with Windows Phone leading the way in terms of growth with 400% growth. iPhone is still the leader while Android at number two and iPad in number three in terms of most number of applications. Blackberry applications are now slightly up to Nokia’s OVI store.
Games are the largest category of apps, and generate the most downloads. On iPhone, there are 79,077 games; on Android, there are 46,045; and on iPad, there are 28,683 games available. Windows Phone comes in fourth, beating out BlackBerry and Nokia as the next largest store for games, and Amazon’s Appstore follows it.
All the above statistics are about US market. The reports also show that US is no longer the biggest consumer of Smart Phone applications. China is really taking over.
The biggest and most interesting part of these reports is the overall applications status. Angry Birds not a shock I guess is the number one application being downloaded. The statistic is platform and price independent and it is the overall downloads of applications being counted here. All platforms and all versions – free + paid.
