Though it may come off as yet another blatant ripoff of the two mighty birds of the App Store, adding to the ranks of other applications that have attempted to reproduce Rovio’s and Andreas Illiger’s success in the past, Brave Beak is rather a spinoff of the two previously mentioned games with unique elements included that make it differ quite a bit – in a good way, of course.
Brave Beak puts you in control of a purple cartoon bird, which this time around can actually reliably fly for some time. You’re posed with the task of ultimately rescuing the missing princess, while navigating through the application’s many compelling levels. You’ll start by shooting the bird from a wooden slingshot structure and will control its up and down movement by holding on the screen and letting go, respectively.
That’s not all there is to the gameplay, though. Each level is cleverly crafted with the hope of keeping you engaged at all times kept in mind throughout. While flying the bird, there are multiple objects to avoid or collect depending on their nature. Inferior birds flying in the opposite direction will award you with points, you can dramatically move the floating clouds for bonus points, can slide on a ramp for extra points as well as a boost, will collect messages in bottles and also will eat jumping fish for energy, which without you’ll crash to the ocean floor resulting in a game over. There are also structures that can be crashed through for additional points, hence the reference to Angry Birds.
Depending on the amount of points you received, as well as the amount of special coins that are hidden throughout the levels that you collect, you’ll be assigned a different rating for each level. The time spent playing each level depends on how well you can accurately come into contact with the jumping fish along with correctly aligning the angle of the bird to ride rainbows, both of which keep your energy meter from completely depleting and from the bird helplessly plummeting into the ocean.
Much like Tiny Wings, there are challenges that can completed optionally for each level. These challenges will range from simple, easy-to-achieve to difficult ones that usually involve luck in order to complete. Regardless, they add additional depth to the game.
Brave Beak’s fun factor doesn’t just lie within its main meat. Its artwork is created with vibrant colors used to fill the various sprites, and the cartoon aesthetic applied to each background, character or object lends itself to the game’s mood. Even though I’ve beat many of the level’s, I’ve often found myself returning to freely gaze at each level’s unique crafting and graphics.
Despite the fact may not initially float your boat if you’re a hardcore Angry Birds player or avid Tiny Wings player, once you download it, your impression will change greatly. The game is thrilling in almost every aspect – you can pick it up for free but only for a limited time.
